We all know about a character who is fun to be around but equally annoying at the same time. Their whole persona is that of someone who makes onlookers go from ‘awww’ to ‘you just did not!’ in a few seconds.

At some point, it feels like these characters are placed in the show solely to lengthen the time of the main leads getting together due to their constant annoying interference. Just reading these few lines might have triggered some of you as you remember some of these characters, and for that — I am truly sorry. But this is in fact, the main topic of concern today as I dive into one such character whose popularity soared for all the good and bad reasons.

Decoding the reasons behind one of the most popular questions from the anime community — Why does everyone hate Chika Fujiwara? Yes, the pink-haired piano prodigy with her cute dance from Kaguya Sama: Love is War is hated by quite a few people.

It might be baffling for Chika fans but this is a fair place, so without wasting much time, let’s begin our investigation on this hot topic and see if we are blindly hating on a cute-faced character or if there is more to her personality.

Chika Fujiwara — Character Analysis

As mentioned before, this is a safe and fair place where I analyze the deepest core of a character and then pass on final judgments. Before going into the hatred madness, it’s only suitable for us to know who, what, and how exactly is Chika Fujiwara from the manga and anime Kaguya Sama: Love is War.

For those of you who haven’t laid your eyes on Chika yet, here’s a picture of her for visual purposes. As you can see, she is all that one can hope for in a typical ‘moe’ character, according to many simping fans.

If you haven’t read the manga or watched the anime then you are probably thinking what a cute girl she is with her slightly curled pink hair decorated with a black ribbon on her bangs. Her big eyes are bright blue with a slight tinge of black around the corners. She is mostly seen in her school uniform for Shuchiin Academy throughout the series with occasional outfit changes.

On top of her adorable build, here are some key traits about Chika -

  • She has a highly energetic personality and is always trying to create a fun atmosphere in the Student Council room.
  • Being a member of the Tabletop Game Club, she makes everyone play weird entertaining games.
  • Unlike general cute-girl characters, Chika is quite sarcastic and witty, as seen in most of her conversations with Ishigami and Shirogane.
  • Her relationship with all the members is quite friendly and she spends most of her time laughing around with them.
  • She is pretty smart for someone with an IQ of 3 as her talents in piano, languages, and sports are highlighted time and again.

So far, all the qualities that have been stated are great and loveable. And yet, Fujiwara-san is still seen as a huge hindrance. Time to find out why!

The Rise in Popularity & Hatred

When season 1 of Kaguya Sama: Love is War rolled out, people could not stop gushing over the cute young love between Kaguya and Shirogane but what made the series even more popular were its equally interesting side characters — Ishigami and Chika.

Fans could not hold their laughter at how these two opposite characters would usually go for each other’s throats with sly remarks and sarcastic comebacks. The duo’s fun moments were timed always perfectly with great expressions and lines but even as individual characters, they were gaining immense popularity.

  • It’s safe to say that one of the reasons behind Chika’s popularity was due to her cute dance that was soon trending all over social media which helped her gain more attraction.
  • People soon began praising her fun outgoing personality and only fell in love more as the series progressed, but that’s when the hate slowly began as well.
  • Chika was quite popular in the beginning but as the anime began moving forward, fans started noticing how she would always manage to ruin romantic scenes between the main leads, which were already scarce due to the anime’s theme.
  • What was seen as adorable at first began to look frustrating with her coming in between the couple’s silent struggles to make each other confess.
  • It was so obvious that her oblivious character would do something to ruin the moment that even Kaguya began to hide her actual motives behind her actions to avoid misfortunes.

All of these frustrating acts of ignorance on top of her usual mean remarks on Ishigami only made fans see her in a negative light and she was soon termed simply annoying and overrated.

The Moment of Truth

In all honesty, if you watch the anime, there will be times when Chika will annoy you so much that your hate will go from 0 to 10 quickly but other than that, you will also find her quite likable.

Since the story revolves around Kaguya and Shirogane, side characters like Chika do not get much screen time but even in those comparatively short scenes, there are moments when her character has shown some endearing gestures.

Not spoiling anything, but Chika is a very caring person who wishes only the best for her friends even though she ruins it for them at times. She helps Shirogane more than once when no one can handle his weaknesses and pushes Kaguya to be happier. As for Ishigami and her rude behavior towards him, it seems like a mutual thing.

Conclusion

Leaving the fact that she can get on your nerves with her interferences, Chika Fujiwara is a vital part of the story. I am not saying she is any less annoying, she definitely is at times but even without her occasional mistakes, the series would not be the same.

Hating the whole character might be a bit extreme but that is on all of you to decide after you watch or read the series. However, you might agree that her presence does make the series a great watch so even if you don’t like her, don’t forget to get your dose of some great rom-com with Kaguya Sama: Love is War. If you haven’t watched it yet, please go for it!
